TOEFL Overview

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a globally recognized English exam created by ETS. It measures how well students can use English in an academic setting. This test is widely accepted by universities, especially in the United States.

TOEFL evaluates four key skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. It is taken online and helps students prove their English ability for university admission.

The Reading section includes 3–5 long passages with questions that test your understanding of main ideas, details, inferences, and more. Some newer question types may ask you to paraphrase or complete summaries. You don’t always need prior subject knowledge to answer correctly.

The Listening section contains 6 long audio clips, including student conversations and academic lectures. You will answer questions based on the main ideas, details, the speaker's purpose, attitude, inferences, and overall organization.

The Speaking section has 6 tasks:

  • 4 Integrated Tasks (reading + listening + speaking)

  • 2 Independent Tasks (opinion-based questions)

You will need to summarize information and express your views clearly, accurately, and confidently.

The Writing section includes two tasks:

1. Integrated Task
Students read a passage and listen to a lecture, then write an essay based on both.

2. Independent Task
Students write an essay expressing their own opinion or ideas on a given topic.

 

TOEFL iBT Structure
